Cloudy sunny breaks. light ACROSS CANADA Today Sun. Today Calgary Montreal Charlottetown Ottawa Edmonton Regina Halifax Saint John Iqaluit Saskatoon Morton Roodman "One of Morton Roodman's favourite expressions was "Push the periscope He lived by this credo throughout his intensely lived, generous and honourable life. A highly accomplished and respected economist, Morton began his career in the Federal Government of Canada working on major Combines investigation cases and then applied his knowledge of industry and international markets, to develop strategies and policies for the Export Development Corporation, Canada's official export credit agency.

Long before the term "BRICs" was coined, Morton foresaw and appreciated the opportunities for Canada's exporters in the fast growing economies of Brazil, China, India, and later also worked on projects in Russia as an independent consultant. His energetic intelligence, seeming effortless capacity to master detailed technical knowledge and new languages, as well as his keen interest in new cultures, complemented his personal charm, humour and great personal integrity. For these reasons, he was entrusted by major international financial institutions to advise on complex trade and investment policy issues and the development of supporting institutional structures in Asia, the Middle East and Russia. As a Canadian working internationally, Morton dedicated significant personal energy to impress upon international policymakers and senior business leaders the importance of transparency, governance and open access to information, as a means of improving the lives of citizens across all levels of society. Mort was a highly sociable man, who had an appreciation for beauty, style, music, food and travel.

A discussion with Morton would often take his interlocutor through a learned discourse on specific societies, with wry exchanges on personal foibles and specific references to bookstores, small antique and curio shops and elegant clothing stores visited on journeys that would echo the footsteps of cultured explorers and bons vivants. Friends also remember regular outings to jazz concerts and the opera with Morton and innumerable conversations about current events that were enriched by his wide-ranging knowledge of modern political and cultural history, acquired through a lifetime of eclectic reading. He could also be extremely funny. Morton was simultaneously a deeply private, spiritual man. His openness to new cultures, active support mentoring of young adults with an ambition to better themselves and their society, and his increasing distrust of aggression in all forms, led him to dedicate an increasing amount of time to the study of his own faith and those of the societies where he lived and worked.

This earned him the admiration, trust and respect of Muslims, Christians and the members of his own Jewish community internationally. Morton passed away in Switzerland in early February 2010, while preparing for his next international assignment. His numerous close friends and colleagues internationally will always remember his great courage and generosity, the abiding interest that he took in their families and loved ones, and his ability to mobilize and energize those he cared for in his wide circle. Most significantly, Morton was a man of peace. May he now be in peace.
