Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that offers several convenient benefits1 that can help pre-approved travelers to get through security faster.

These include expedited security checks, dedicated customs lanes with potentially shorter wait times, Automated Passport Control (APC) kiosks for less paperwork, and often quicker entry in other countries.

However, you must renew Global Entry every five years to continue enjoying the benefits. This guide will explain how Global Entry renewal works and cover associated fees as well.

Global Entry lasts for five years. You can check your expiration by logging into your Department of Homeland Security Trusted Traveler Programs account. Navigate to your account dashboard to find the expiration date.2

You can renew your membership up to one year before expiration. Renewing as soon as possible may be a good idea if you’re certain that you want to renew.

CBP offers a 24-month grace period post-expiration if you renew before expiration. This allows you to continue using your Global Entry benefits for up to 24 months after expiration, while CBP processes your renewal.3

However, if you renew after expiration, you do not get to continue using the benefits.

While the renewal application for Global Entry may not take long, the processing times for conditional approval can vary a great deal, from as little as 24 hours to a full year. In some cases, it could take even longer.4

However, if you are timed out of the application process or must come back later, it should save your progress.

Here is how to submit your renewal application:

  1. Log into your Trusted Traveler Program (TTP) account
First, log onto the TTP website.
  2. Set up an account
If you do not currently have a login.gov account, then you will be directed to login.gov to create an account first. You’ll also need to connect the account with your PASSID (membership number). See the back of your Trusted Traveler card or your approval letter for this information.
  3. Complete your renewal application
From your Dashboard, you can select the Renew button on your Global Entry program membership section. You must also declare your citizenship. Follow the guidelines provided on the Membership Renewal page, finish the application, and click the Pay Now button.
